The Name, The Myth, The Legend or Everything you always wanted to know about Ansons, but were afraid to ask... The name "Anson" is a derivative of the Germanic form of "Johnson." The German equivalent to "John" is "Hans," whose son would natually be called "Hanson" or "Hansen" (i.e., "Han's son"). Dropping the leading "H" yields "Anson." Contrary to popular baby name books, the name does not mean "Ann's son". We have no idea when or how the name changed from a surname to a given name or vice versa (or, for that matter, if it whether it originally a surname or a given name). If you know or think you know, please tell us. If you know of an Anson (person, place or thing) not included here, please let us know. Please be patient! The pages have lots of pictures and may load slowly! It's worth the wait!
